“So great is my veneration for the Bible, and so strong my belief, that when duly read and meditated on, it is of all books in the world, that which contributes most to make men good, wise, and happy.” John Quincy Adams
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved!
(Testimonies of those saved by grace though faith in Christ Jesus)
Perhaps many of the readers of this article have never heard of Harry Monroe. However, I suspect more will recognize the name of Billy Sunday, the baseball player turned evangelist and Mel Trotter of rescue mission notoriety. Harry Monroe led both of these men, and many others to the Lord. Here’s how Harry came to know Christ. “At sixteen, I kissed my mother good-bye stole away from home and went to Boston. I got into bad company and went wrong. I followed the circus and the stage, and was arrested again and again, and only escaped severe punishment by leaving the state. I came to Chicago and continued the old life. One night while passing the Pacific Garden Mission, at the end of a debauch, I heard singing and ventured in, and Mrs. Clark, in her kindly way, talked with me. The next night I went again and heard Colonel Clark; his message and tears broke my heart, and when he made an appeal, I raised my hand. He came to me and said, ‘Jesus loves you, and so do I.’ We bowed in prayer” and Harry Monroe goes on to say he got a vision of what Christ had done for him and says, “I was saved.”
Is Jesus Christ your Savior? If not, realize that Jesus Christ loves you (John 3:16-18). Second, He died for your sins and rose again from the dead to make it possible that you might be saved (Romans 4:25; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Third, realize that your good works cannot save you from your sins (Ephesians 2:8-9). Fourth, repent of your sins (Luke 13:3). Fifth, pray and ask Christ to forgive your sins and save your soul (Romans 10:9-13). Finally, believe that you have been saved for John 1:12 says, “But as many as received him (Jesus Christ), to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
The Bible Is The Touch Stone
Dr. John Owen (1616-1683)
“In these evil days wherein we live, I hear many daily complaining that there is such difference and contrariety among preachers, they know not what to do nor scarce what to believe. My answer is, Do but your own duty, and this trouble is at an end. Is there any contrariety in the book of God? Pin not your faith upon men’s opinions; the Bible is the touchstone. That there is such diversity amongst teachers is their fault, who should think all the same thing; but that this is so troublesome to you is your own fault, for neglecting your duty of trying all things by the word. Alas! You are in a miserable condition, if you have all this while relied on the authority of men in heavenly things.”
