“…graven with an iron pen and lead…” Job 19:24

God & Country
The summer of 2003 I was invited to preach in an early morning chapel service in Washington D.C. for a national auto skills competition. My wife and I stayed on the third floor of a beautiful hotel. From our window we could see the magnificent granite and marble structure we know as the Washington Monument. This structure reaches 555 feet, 5.125 inches into the air. A person can climb the 898 steps. If you do make the climb, be sure to stop at some, if not all of the 50 landings and read the messages on the memorial stones. On the 12th landing is a prayer offered by the City of Baltimore. At the 20th landing you will is a memorial presented by a group of Chinese Christians. When you get to the 24th landing you will see that Sunday School Children from New York and Philadelphia made a presentation that included quotes from Proverbs 10:7, Luke 18:16; and Proverbs 22:6. When you get to the very top landing, there you can see the 69 square miles of the District of Columbia on a clear day. But, there is one more thing you should know. Over the head of those standing on the top platform, at the very top of the monument is an aluminum cap. Engraved on the outside top of that cap are two Latin words – Laus Deo. The words simply mean Praise or Glory be to God.

The fingerprints of koala bears are virtually indistinguishable from those of humans, so much so that they could be confused at a crime scene.
